In the middle of a very busy traffic roundabout near the York Castle Museum is the Green Howards Regiment War Memorial for the Boer War (South African War) of 1899-1902. On this face it is recorded that 8 soldiers of the 3rd Battalion were killed in the fighting, but 45 died of didease (typhoid, enteric fever).
